The Law of Jante Rules…NOT

By Mikkel Juhl On September 9, 2009 Under General

Now you think, what the.. is “The Law of Jante”: The Law of Jante (da. Janteloven) is a Danish “law” like the Ten Commandments. Well it is not the same as the Ten Commandments. The Law of Jante goes like this:

  • You shall not think that you are special
  • You shall not think that you are of the same standing as us
  • You shall not think that you are wiser than us
  • Don’t fancy yourself as being better than us
  • You shall not think that you know more than us
  • You shall not think that you are more (important) than us
  • You shall not think that you are good at anything
  • You shall not laugh at us
  • You shall not think that anyone cares about you
  • You shall not think that you can teach us anything

The Law of Jante is originally written by Aksel Sandemose. He is from the Danish city Nykøbing Mors where the law was used a lot back when he lived (1899-1965).

The only thing you can learn about this is to do the opposite of what the Law of Jante is telling you.

Do you know Anja Andersen? A Danish handballer, she is now a manager for FC København Handball. Sometimes she wear a t-shirt that says “Fuck Janteloven” – And that is the only I ever agreed with her.

So if you want success online you SHOULD follow these “laws”:

  • You shall think that you are special
  • You shall think that you are of the same standing as us
  • You shall think that you are wiser than us
  • Fancy yourself as being better than us
  • You shall think that you know more than us
  • You shall think that you are more (important) than us
  • You shall think that you are good at what you are doing
  • You shall laugh at us
  • You shall think that anyone cares about you
  • You shall think that you can teach us anything

Believe in Yourself

Do you think Yaro, Brian and Darren would have been capable of doing all what they have done, if they didn’t believed in themselves?

To get success online you need to believe in yourself and you need to take action – Then you can get results. If you don’t believe in your work, you will not succeed. Everybody that has a big blog would not have gotten that a big blog if they haven’t believed in themselves and their blog.

You have to believe in yourself! Go for it!

I think you could improve your list into being like this:

You should consider yourself special
You should consider yourself better than your competition – believe it, and reap the fruits from believing it
You should realize you are wiser than most
You should consider yourself better than most
You should exhibit you know more than many
Love yourself. Indeed you must before you can motivate others
You should focus on your strong points in what you are doing
You should be able to laugh at errors mdash; and learn from them
You must realize many are egotists, but still be gratious to all
You should continue teaching others, helping them see things your way

I think THAT list is even more beautiful. Don’t you? :-)

That is TRULY a great list!

It is much better, I will let my list stay, and let yours be in the comments.. But your list is better.. I will be the first to admit that.

There is a hidden meaning to these laws.
