How to Get More Comments Installing a Plugin!

By Mikkel Juhl On August 25, 2009 Under Build Your Blog

Do you have a blog? 95% of my readers do have a blog (according to the poll), nothing wrong with that, not at all. But the 95% those who have a blog, is your blog using DoFollow? I bet 75% of you arent, and maybe 25% doesn’t know if they do, or don’t.

What is NoFollow and DoFollow

NoFollow is a HTML attribute that is used to instruct search engine, that the link should not have any influence on the position of the link’s site.

DoFollow do the opposite, well there is not a thing called rel=”dofollow”, as there is with NoFollow (rel=”nofollow”). So if a link without the attribute rel=”nofollow” you get an inbound link, which can affect your position in Google or other search engines.

By default a self-hosted WordPress blog do not have DoFollow activated. A plug-in can change that, easily.

Why You Should Use DoFollow

People will be more likely to comment on your blog posts, because they will get something out of the comment. Many blog owners do this, because it is an easy way to get backlinks.

What is backlinks?

“Backlinks is links back you your blog, Google rank your blog better if you have links to your blog. The more the better.”- From DaneBlogger’s Guide to Blogging Success

So if your blog is DoFollow people will be more likely because they will get the backlink that can rank their blog better on Google.

So if you would make your blog a DoFollow blog you should make some marketing out of it. Really write a bold label and mark your blog: I’M USING DOFOLLOW TAGS ON MY BLOG, that would make people comment more.

Why You Should Use NoFollow

By using NoFollow tags to all external links, you are preserving link juice. If you keep the link juice, you will be able to get a higher PR.

If you use NoFollow search engine will not visit pages on your blog like the login/registration and that is a good thing, why should search engine ever see your login page? It just uses all the bandwidth.

If you are using NoFollow you shouldn’t promote it, at all. Don’t tell anyone, it can demotivate the reader to write a comment, (as said you should promote if you use DoFollow).

Okay, there are good things about NoFollow and good thing about DoFollow, so it is up to you what you choose. I use NoFollow (explained in comments).

And by the way, what do you use?

8 comments - add yours

Good and valid points, as always… :-)

BUT there is a logical reason for using NoFollow, and that would be the fact that I don’t necessarily recommend someone just by allowing his or her comments When I do recommend, I add people to link menus – and they will be followed by search engines…

Regardless of PR it’s important not to link in blindness. You run the risk of people linking to trash AFTER you checked their sites, and that could be penalized if done in excess.

and just for the record you have rel=’external nofollow’ in your source code. :-D

The reason why I don’t use DoFollow on my blog is:

By using NoFollow tags to all external links, you are preserving link juice. If you keep the link juice, you will be able to get a higher PR.

And I don’t want lots of spam comments, I would like people write comments with value and not because they get some easy backlinks.

That is, pardon my french, speaking with a dual tongue…

Either you recommend one thing or the other. I have spoken clearly about the arguments for and against the NoFollow tag, and clearly explained why I use the nofollow-tag.

You specifically stated:

If you are using NoFollow you shouldn’t promote it, at all. Don’t tell anyone, it can demotivate the reader to write a comment, (as said you should promote if you use DoFollow).

So that’s why I peeked into the source code. And found that you recommended DoFollow, yet used NoFollow.

But instead of arguing with you on this, let me state that I give comments to HELP others. When they won’t listen, I won’t keep knocking on their doors. I help people who DESIRE to be helped. Those who don’t will get nowhere with arrogance. Either they understand the language in which they blog, or they don’t.

Good luck.

Furthermore, the plugin is somewhat annoying. Why not let statistics remain? Why should it reset just because one month passes?

When you want more comments, it would be discouraging to write on the 25th in the month of february – only to see that a reset is made three days later.

But it’s your choice, Sir. :-)
