5 Ways to Get Backlinks (And Some Traffic)

By Mikkel Juhl On October 16, 2009 Under Build Your Blog

When you are building your blog one of the most important things to kick off your blog you need to have backlinks.

Anyway what is a backlink?

Backlinks are incoming links to a blog/website. In the SEO world, the number of backlinks is one way to indicate the popularity/importance of a blog.

In the blog post I will give you some examples on how I get backlinks regularly. The methods works well, most of them are just work from you, but some of the methods other should act.

1. Social Media

This is probably one of the easiest ways to get lots of traffic and some good ranking on Google on a specific. You just need to work really hard with your headlines, to make people Digg.

So you can easily Digg your way to the front page on Digg. But to reach the front page you need many to Digg your story (easily done if you have lots of followers on Twitter, how to get followers on Twitter).

Many who Diggs doesn’t read the entire blog post, normally only the headline (this should be eye-catching). Maybe they want to read the description. After that they decide whether to Digg or not to Digg.

You can also use your Facebook account to promote your blog posts, this just requires lots of friends that are targeted on Facebook. Again an easy way to get backlinks, but this doesn’t mean traffic (unless you have a eye-catching headline) and I think when you do a Facebook message it is to get traffic, not for the backlink.

2. Guest Blogging on Other Blogs

To guest post is really a good way to get backlinks and traffic, if you write great content people will click on the link back to your site.

To get the traffic you really need to make a great performance on that blog. You remember what I said about that eye-catching headline? You have to make the reference text of yours too.

(This here would work really good if I wrote a blog post, for another blog on how to start with blogging or something like that)

At first this is not eye-catching and not relevant to the blog post I just wrote, far from.

A place you could start writing a guest blog is here, on my blog. If you like, just contact me. I actually do reply, and I would like you to write for me.

3. Article Directories

This is another easy way to get backlinks while this really needs lots of work. You have to link to your article to make it rank on Google to make people read the article, to make people to click the link in your resource box to get to your page.

So on this you really need to produce quality content. Of course if you write around 20 articles publish them on EzineArticles you would have a great chance for ranking good, with many links and some of the articles to get successful and get read by others (than your mom  )

The strategy is pretty much the same as with guest blogging, you need eye-catching headlines.

4. Be Gentle

You need to be gentle, saw the blog post I wrote about Twitter and how to get lots of followers on Twitter I wrote about this awesome guy called David King (I bet you think he’s cool too ;-) ).

I linked to his Twitter account, I was gentle to him, he really appreciated it. He gave me some links and recommendation.

So I was linking to him, one time and he linked to me twice as many times than I did. Just try to see if you can link to people, that have the time for appreciating a link to the site (this is not Yaro, Brian Clark and/or Darren Rowse.)

They are to busy and don’t expect a link to your site, if you just link to them.

You need to catch bloggers on your level (or maybe a bit higher level) well the traffic part will not work, if you have a network with this blogger and a few others. You would probably share the same readers. If not, it’s cool!

5. Create Great Content

This is the thing I like most about blogging, to deliver great content and then get linked to your blog because of that, it really feels great doesn’t it? I got direct messages, emails etc. asking if they can write a review of my blog, for free because of my content.

You just feel like you have people to listen to you. Just take your time to great blog posts, read them, do whatever you can to make them perfect and be sure to catch up on something your readers want to read.

You could be watching forums to see what people find difficult right now and then be one of the first to write about the issue, then post a link in the forum. Easy backlink there ;-)

I hope you got smarter here, I really do so now get out and write some quality content and use the methods to get backlinks!

Great Post.

Getting backlinks play a huge part in Googles eyes. The more backlinks the more chance of ranking higher in google. As you said social bookmarking can get you good traffic if you have lots of fans willing to digg or tweet your post. Also guest posting is also a good way to get some good traffic.
